This large patriotic tumbler of lead glass has the Great Seal of the United States engraved on it. The seal was designed in Philadelphia by Charles Thomson, secretary of the Continental Congress, and William Barton, and first used in 1782. This fine American tumbler was probably made in Philadelphia some time in the 1780s, after 1782. I look at this glass as Philadelphia's answer to the political engraved glasses that were being made at this same time in New Bremen, Maryland by John Frederick Amelung. To my knowledge this is a unique specimin and an iconic piece of American glass. 5 inches tall and 4.5 inches in diameter across the top. Excellent condition.
