Rare German glass enameled in black and white on a glass with a second gather containing 12 ribs that have each been hand pinched twice to form spikes (spiked gadrooning). The glass also has an applied trailed foot. 10.16 centimeters tall (4 inches). The title of the glass (over the portrait) translates to "Humility" the saying translates into something like this "He who is proud and strives for arrogance and laughs at the humble poor is himself despised by God" A remarkable survivor, none of the spikes are broken off and aside for some minor enamel loos on the spikes the glass is in superb condition. A related glass can be seen in German Enameled Glass by Saldern on page 177, being enameled in black and white and having the same type of very distinctive spiked gadrooning on 12 ribs. That piece is in the Germanisches National Museum in Nuremberg and dated to the first half of the 17th century.
