This is an incredilbe pair of English lead glass Anglo Venetian candlesticks circa 1680. One socket has been reglued a long time ago and the drip pan is cracked. the other stick is good. The socket lips have been folded inward. Beneath the socket sandwiched bewtween two disks are incised quatrefoil knops that contain an airtrap, those rest on drip pans that have been patterned in a 14 rib mold. The tops of the conical feet are gadrooned, also using the 14 rib mold. The edge of the feet has been folded to the outside. Please see the last photo where I compare one of the candlesticks to a sweetmeat glass in the Fitzwilliam Museum that they attribute to the factory of George Ravenscroft. they both have the same heavy outward fold to the base, the same conical shape to the base, they are both gadrooned using the 14 rib mold and they both have incised quatrefoil knops with internal airtraps. There are also a number of other documented Ravenscroft pieces like small gadrooned posset pots that use the 14 rib mold. A Ravenscroft helmet shaped jug in the V & A Museum used the 14 rib mold and has an insiced quatrefoil knop with airtrap, sandwiched between two disks. While these do not have the Ravenscroft seal, all their characteristicks point to Ravenscroft. This pair of candlesticks sold at Sotheby's London June 23, 1944 and were used as the frontispiece for the catalog. The damage was present in 1944. Email me for the catalog pictures. Height: 18.41 cm (7.25 inches).
