This is an incredible Reichsadler enameled goblet dated 1652. The enamel work is amongst the finest you will see from mid 17th centry Germany. This incredible object was once part of the Eugene and Ernst Herzfelder collection that sold on April 15, 1929 in Vienna and this enameled goblet was used as the frontispiece for the auction catalog. An original copy of the 1929 auction catalog is included with this piece. This goblet originally had a glass funnel foot that was probably broken not long after this goblet was made in 1652. A master carver then created the base for this goblet depicting a figural seated Turk. This 17th century make do base is a marvel in and of itself! An elaborate cover was also carved for the goblet at the same time having the imperial eagle used as the finial. Overall height 55.8 centimeters (22 inches). Height to the top of the glass 37.46 centimeters (14.75). Corning Museum has a Reichsadler goblet of this form that still has the glass funnel foot, however theirs is also broken and cracked and the foot is held on with a metal rod. The Corning example can be seen here - https://glasscollection.cmog.org/objects/7270/goblet?ctx=792fd21e189021a62cffd12c054c99fa3f9e5fd1&idx=0 This is truly a masterpiece of 17th century German work and in my humble opinion, the incredibly carved 17th century replacement foot makes this piece both unique and even more important than had it still had the original plain glass foot.
