This remarkable enameled humpen that is dated 1642 is an example of some of the best enamel work being produced in Germany in the mid 17th century. The beautiful handwriting on this piece is just over the top. The early gothic style German calligraphy is not the easiest to translate but it basically translates to:  "We angles of the heavens are surprised that the people of this earth strive so much after wealth and money, building houses and cities even though they are only devout guests, where they should be thinking more about their eternity which does not seem to concern them very much." Standing 20.3 centimeters tall (8 inches) and in fine condition. A top example of German enamel work and a design that I have not seen duplicated on any other glass. This glass appears to be related to other glasses from this time period that I see attributed to Franconia.
