This very colorful glass secchiello was made in Venice about 1700. The rare use of the colored canes in this example sets it apart from most others. The body is entirely made from the colored and white canes with no clear layer either over or under the canes. The handle was even covered in thin white canes. There is a clear glass band applied to the rim and also a trailed clear glass foot that has been flattened. These small pails were hung inside the home and were used for holy water. Many examples of secchiellos can be seen in the book Venezianisches Glas der Veste Coburg on pages 526 through 529 . Numerous examples can also be seen in the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia in Venice. This is the finest example of a secchiello I have ever seen. A rare opportunity. 7.62 centimeters (3 inches) tall to the rim of the pail. The diameter at the rim is 8.89 centimeters (3.5 inches). Undamaged.
