Freeblown perfume bottle with applied type 1 lilypad decoration, probably made in Millville, NJ circa 1850. Highly ususual example with gold ruby being used in this non-lead glass piece. This is obviously a one of a kind offhand piece made by a blower probably as a gift for a wife or mother. It was made in a glasshouse without a cutting shop for neither plug of the stopper or the inside of the neck have been ground to fit the stopper. The stopper was just tooled by the blower for the best fit he could manage. The blower then took this bottle to a lapidary, a gem cutter, who then cut the top of the stopper into a seven sided pyramid, matching the seven lilypad pulls on the bottle. While cranberry colored glass is very rare in South Jersey lilypad glass it is not unheard of. A blown pitcher in the Metropolitain Museum of Art has ruby threading around the throat. If you want a unique piece of Jersey lilypad decorated glass, this is it. 7.25 inches tall, applied clear foot and rough pontil.
